Initially developed for evaporative cooling garments, the material soon attracted the attention of innovators in the reusable hygiene sector. As the market experienced rapid growth in multi-use period and incontinence products, our technology emerged as a promising solution for use as a highly absorbent core.

Our collaboration with customers in this sector has continued to grow, with the insights gained helping to shape and strengthen our ongoing fabric development programmes -most recently culminating in the launch of our second-generation range.

What began as a role purely supplying raw materials has evolved into deep expertise in washable absorbent fabrics, particularly in end-product construction and in optimising the performance of the absorbent core.

As mentioned in previous articles, one of the key trade-offs the market has come to accept over the past decade of rapid innovation is that products designed to deliver high levels of absorbency and retention will typically require longer drying times. This is particularly true when incorporating one of our superabsorbent fabrics, which reach their highest level of saturation during the washing cycle. The benefit, however, is that this level of performance provides the wearer with confidence that the product will not let them down in use – and that should remain one of the primary design requirements in this sector.

By addressing this trade-off early in discussions with customers, we can guide how our fabrics can be integrated most effectively into their products, helping them to fully realise the benefits of their superabsorbent performance. These conversations usually focus on the specifics of end-product construction.

Layer 1: skin-facing top-sheet
The top layer plays a vital role: it is both in direct contact with the skin and serves as the initial point of fluid entry. Selecting the right material is essential to ensure optimal fluid management.

We generally recommend starting with a fast-wicking cotton. Customers are encouraged to run their own trials to understand how top-layer option performs in combination with the layer 2 material, ensuring the desired absorbency speed is achieved.

Layer 2: superabsorbent fabric core
With product constructions varying widely, we offer a range of superabsorbent fabric core solutions. The available grades can be used as benchmarks, with bespoke fabric development programmes offered where required and commercially feasible.

For the design of absorbent period products, we recommend beginning evaluation with:
Type 7171 – Product page
Type 2786 – Product page

For higher-absorbency period products and light incontinence products, two slightly thicker variants are available:
Type 7144 – Product page
Type 2734 – Product page

For maximum absorbency applications, we offer:
Type 7170 – Product page
Type 2782 – Product page

Layer 3: waterproof material
From the wearer’s perspective, this layer is essential, helping to keep outer garments dry if, for any reason, the superabsorbent fabric core is overwhelmed or otherwise compromised.

While several material options exist, our experience shows that cast PU maintains its performance best after repeated wash and dry cycles. PE is also durable through laundering, but it tends to produce a crinkling noise, making it less suitable for applications where discretion is important.

Layer 4: bottom sheet
Of the four layers, the bottom sheet serves the simplest function and is typically constructed from the same material as the main body of the product or garment.

From a construction perspective, we recommend keeping all four layers as loose and unrestricted as possible, typically by sewing only the edges. This allows the superabsorbent core to achieve optimal absorption and drying, as any constraint on the layers can compromise performance. It is therefore important to test different approaches during the trial phase to determine the best method.

Our team at Technical Absorbents has grown alongside the reusable hygiene sector, gaining a deeper understanding of end users’ needs and how our superabsorbent fabrics can help meet them. With the market expected to expand rapidly in the coming years, we remain committed to ongoing innovation and to supporting our customers at every stage of their product development journey.

To arrange an informal call or Teams discussion, please email info@exploreSAF.com.

It has been more than a decade since Technical Absorbents engineered its first washable superabsorbent fabric.
