Multi-Generational Washable Absorbent Fabric Technology

Washable Super Absorbent Fabrics

Multi-Generational Washable Absorbent Fabric Technology

Since we originally launched a launderable superabsorbent fabric in 2014, both our technology and the markets and applications it serves have undergone significant development.

Back then – although only twelve years ago – the concept of a superabsorbent-containing fabric, which was launderable – was mind-blowing. How could a technology that was associated with disposable products become a key component in washable and reusable absorbent cores?

Firstly, is the type of superabsorbent used — ours is a Super Absorbent Fibre (SAF™), not a powder. Rather than applying as a surface coating, the fibre blends with the other raw materials at the first stage of production, ensuring full integration within the fabric structure.

Secondly, the SAF™ grade is critical. We produce a wide range of fibres for commercial sale, as well as innovative grades developed exclusively for use in our own fabrics. In each generation of our washable fabrics, the selection of SAF™ has been a crucial factor.

Lastly, fabric construction is a key consideration. The primary challenge has been how best to retain the SAF™ through repeated wash and dry cycles while still ensuring a soft, conformable finish.

Fabric Construction

Since launch, the construction of our washable absorbent fabric line has evolved in direct response to market insights and customer feedback. While these fabrics were initially engineered as the absorbent core for evaporative cooling garments, their unique performance characteristics quickly attracted interest from innovators in the reusable period and incontinence care markets.

Our first-generation washable fabrics — still available today and used in commercialised products — feature a laminated construction with additional protective layers that safeguard the SAF™ during laundering. These fabrics withstand over 100 wash cycles at 60 °C while retaining more than 70% of their original absorbency.

In early 2025, we introduced our second-generation fabrics, featuring a simplified, non-laminated construction that delivers increased flexibility and improved wash and drying performance. This was achieved through the incorporation of a specialist SAF™ grade within the blend.

This fibre eliminated the need for additional laminates, enabling our lightest washable fabric to date at just 120gsm. The range has been tested to 250 washes at 60 °C, retaining 90% of its original absorbency.

Finding the Balance

This development was driven by feedback from the hygiene market. As the market has evolved, it has become clear that no single fabric can optimise every performance attribute. Products prioritising maximum absorbency and retention must accept a trade-off in drying time. The market is increasingly recognising this balance, and feedback to date has been extremely positive.

We continue to offer new customers access to both first- and second-generation fabrics, enabling early trials to determine the most suitable option. With product constructions varying widely, offering a range of solutions is essential. These available grades may be used as benchmarks, with bespoke fabric development programmes available where required and commercially feasible.
